그들의 찬송가: The Rose

세번째 같이 부른 노래도 귀에 익은 팝송이었다. “The Rose"라는 곡. "love"라는 단어가 반복되면서 그들의 박애적인 정서가 물씬 풍겨나온다. 내 기억엔 부분적인 수정이 있었는데, 사랑은 면도날이라는 두번째 줄 가사는 불리지 않았던 것 같다. 사랑을 찬양하는 노래로 톤을 바꾸어놓은 것.

이 날 예배에 참석한 사람은 5명이었다. 목사 부부와 다른 부부 한 쌍, 그리고 할머니 한 분. 모두 백인 늙은이들이었다. 노래는 한 할머니가 나와서 재롱을 피우며 지휘하였다. 컴퓨터 미디 파일의 조야한 소리를 테이프에 녹음해와서 틀어주며 노래를 불렀다. 그 할머니나 옆에 앉아 노래를 부르는 목사나 엄청난 음치여서 내가 알던 멜로디가 맞나 헷갈릴 정도였다. 아무래도 뉴에이지는 노래만큼이나 오래된 백인 노인들의 종교가 아닌가하는 생각이 스치듯이 들었다.
